We know how it is. You’re suffering from chronic pain that has gone unexplained for months, maybe years. Your blood tests have returned normal, and you are at your wit’s end. Long Island Spine Rehabilitation Medicine is here to help you. If you are troubled by neuromuscular problems in your back, neck, or limbs, our experienced team will work with you to find an answer and provide the treatment you need.

After a full work-up, if your physician cannot find any answers, they may order an EMG Nerve Conduction Study to discover what is wrong. At Long Island Spine Rehabition, our team specializes in these benign tests, ensuring the most positive experience. Call our Huntington, NY office today to discuss your options.

What is an EMG Nerve Conduction Study?

An electromyography study is a low-risk process consisting of two procedures: nerve conduction and a needle EMG. This procedure helps identify and understand any irregularities in the transmission of electrical signals between your nerves and muscles.

  • Nerve Conduction Study (NCS) Testing – This test measures the function of peripheral nerves to detect the presence and extent of peripheral nerve damage. An NCS will apply surface electrodes to your skin to measure the speed and strength of transmitted electrical signals through your sensory nerves and a peripheral nerve.
  • Electromyography (EMG) Testing – This test measures how much electrical activity a muscle contraction produces. An EMG inserts small needle electrodes into the target muscle to record electrical activity.

The doctor can perform these tests separately. If both are ordered, they are typically performed together. During the test, you will be asked to contract and release the muscles and may be asked to change positions.

Symptoms that Warrant EMG Studies

Your doctor may order an EMG/NCS study if you are experiencing recurring neuromuscular problems in your back, neck, or limb. These symptoms include:

  • Tingling (Pins and needles)
  • Muscle Pain, spasms, or cramping
  • Muscle weakness or fatigue
  • Pain in your limbs
  • Numbness

Even if these symptoms are not constant, the fact they recur could be a sign of several conditions. Your doctor may have ordered an EMG after gathering your complete medical history and performing a physical exam to collect the necessary data for a definitive diagnosis.

What Conditions Do EMG and NCS Help Diagnose

An EMG Nerve Conduction study is helpful for medical professionals to diagnose or rule out many common and serious conditions in patients. These conditions include:

  • Sciatica
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Radiculopathy (pinched nerves)
  • Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow or wrist
  • Plexopathy, Brachial and lumbosacral plexus

We aim to help pinpoint your condition and treat it so you can live your life to the fullest. We understand these conditions can cause a list of debilitating and exhausting symptoms. Here at Long Island Spine Rehabilitation, we treat the person, not the symptoms, focusing on increasing your quality of life and wellness.

How to Prepare for an EMG Nerve Conduction Study

Any medical procedure is a nerve-wracking experience, regardless of how mild it is. Before your EMG, your healthcare provider will answer any questions or concerns.

Here are important preparation guidelines required for the EMG Study:

  • Bathe or shower the night before or the morning of the procedure to remove excess oil from your skin.
  • Do NOT apply any lotion or creams on the day of the procedure.
  • Remove all jewelry, watches, eyewear, or other metal objects.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
  • Turn off electronic devices (i.e., cell phones, tablets, etc.) during the test.

Following these directions is vital to avoid interfering with the EMG results. Typically, this procedure is outpatient, and most patients can return to their daily routine after leaving. However, if the patient has requested mild sedation, the doctor will provide post-procedure requirements, including additional rest.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do you have questions about EMG nerve conduction studies? We have answers.

Does an EMG test hurt?

The needle prick from the EMG and the electrical pulse from the NCS may cause mild discomfort during the test. After the test, you may develop some bruising or muscle soreness, which should disappear in about a week.

How long does an EMG and NCS take?

An NCS test can take 15 minutes to an hour, and an EMG test can take around 30 to 60 minutes. Together, it can take about an hour to two hours.

Are there any side effects or risks?

An EMG is generally safe with limited complications. Very rarely, patients may experience:

  • An infection at the insertion site
  • Bleeding, especially if you have a bleeding disorder, are on blood thinners or other medications or herbal supplements. Make sure to let your doctor know what medications you are on.
  • Nerve injury in high-risk muscle areas

Consult your doctor if you have any medical conditions or other concerns they should be aware of.

What happens after the test?

Once you have completed your test, you can return to your regular activities unless your healthcare provider provides alternate instructions.

The muscles tested may feel sore and develop bruising, tingling, and swelling. You can apply ice or a cold pack for 10 to 20 minutes and take Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Advil (ibuprofen) for pain.

When will I get my results?

You can expect to receive your EMG and NCS results within a few days after your procedure. Your doctor will review them and call you to discuss the results.
